Little Boy

Who head-butted so hard he broke

His caregiver’s nose that doctor’s put

A metal bracelet with his name and

His phone number

Because he couldn’t communicate yet

Inconsolable child

He hit everyone

He fought every peer that asked to share

He fought back with his brother

He threw toys when mad

Petulant child

I spent hours giving options

Before he’d color a picture

He only let me hold him

When he was hurt

Inconsolable child

He got mad whenever left behind

But if asked to join

He’d pretend he didn’t care

Petulant child

He ran up to me

Hugged me when he saw I came back

Inconsolable child

He picked me a bouquet of dandelions

In one little hand too small

To blow the wishes out so he asked for my help

Petulant child

Watching him grow

Petulant

Inconsolable

Knowing he was never to blame
