A Name Like Father

I

A man is dead

He once walked on the earth

But tonight he sleeps beneath it

A man is dead

Turn you gaze to the funeral

Proceeding down center street

A man is dead

I don’t recognize him

But he could be someone’s son

A man is dead

His last name looks

Like the one that follows my first

A man is dead

My family leaves tears on handkerchiefs

Like Hansel’s breadcrumbs

A man is dead

He’s not coming back

But I don’t know how to feel sad

A man is dead

And I don’t know him

II

The tombstone

Centered

Our names, one gun

Shot

To represent his help

In our county’s

Wars

A flag draped over a

Face

We couldn’t see

III

When his cologne stops smelling

Like him

And starts smelling like the box of clothes stuffed

With memories

My five year old heart was never capable of holding onto

IV

Father:

– a synonym to something I wanted but never had

  1. Wonderful writing technique, I love the broken up lines. Makes me think of something along the lines of a broken tone with a broken heart

  2. Wonderful writing technique. The broken up lines make me think of a way to express one’s broken tone—or even heart.
